OVERVIEW
The
Education Program houses 3 majors: Childhood, Secondary, and Bilingual Education.
These majors were created as a response to a predicted teacher shortage
nationwide. This shortage is envisioned as being particularly acute among
minority teachers, especially in the City of New York. The Education majors
provide a broad intellectual foundation and an understanding of the world we
live in, its history, diversity and cultures.
The Childhood and
Secondary Education majors are designed for students who
are interested in pursuing teaching as a career and who plan to transfer to either
the Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department or the Secondary
Education and Youth Services at Queens College, CUNY. The majors can lead to
admission to Queens College upon successful completion of LaGuardia's Associate
in Arts (AA) degree requirements in Liberal Arts and provide a clearly defined
academic path that leads to New York State provisional certification in
teaching. They also ensure that the students' course selections at LaGuardia
will satisfy degree requirements at Queens College.
The
Education Associate: Bilingual Child major is designed for students interested in
pursuing teaching as a career with a focus on second language learners, and who
want to transfer to City College, CUNY. This major is coordinated by the
Education and Language Acquisition Department and awards the Associate in Arts
(AA) degree. Since the major focuses on Spanish-speaking children, candidates
for admission are expected to demonstrate oral and written proficiency in Spanish
equivalent to ELS105 Spanish for Fluent Speakers 1.
Students
who need additional skill development in reading, writing, mathematics and
communication will be required to take basic skills and/or ESL courses. These
courses are not listed in the curriculum. The particular courses students must
successfully complete are determined by their scores on the college placement
test. In addition to any basic skill requirements, students must complete the
required number of credits in each program.
Due
to recent New York State Teacher Education Requirements, there have curriculum
changes across all three of the majors offered within the Education program;
therefore, it is imperative that all education students consult a Faculty
Advisor in the Education Program before selecting courses each semester.
Bilingual
Education majors interested in transferring to City College or other colleges
to continue studies in Bilingual Education should consult with a Faculty
Advisor in the Education Program as early as possible.
Childhood
Education majors interested in transferring to the
Elementary and Early Childhood Education Department at
Queens College should be aware of the following:
Students
in the Childhood Education major
must have a grade of B in each of the core content areas: English, Social
Science, Math, and Physical Science; no grade lower than a C is acceptable into
the Queens College program. The transferability of grades lower than a C is
determined by Queens College. Grades of B or better are required for ENG101 or
ENG102. If a student does not take courses recommended in the Flexible Core at
LaGuardia, they may have to take additional courses to complete their degree
requirements at Queens College. Grades of B or better are required for all core
courses in the Education Program.
Students in these programs are required to complete a Liberal Arts co-major
along with the education co-major at Queens College. Queens College offers a
large number of liberal arts co-majors. Therefore, the Liberal Arts elective
credits at LaGuardia should be taken toward a Liberal Arts major at Queens
College and students should consult with an advisor before selecting electives.
Childhood
Education majors interested in transferring to other colleges should consult
with a Faculty Advisor in the Education Program.
Secondary
Education majors interested in transferring to the
Secondary Education and Youth Services Department at
Queens College should be aware of the following:

Secondary
Education majors interested in transferring to other colleges should consult
