If you are eligible to vote (qualifications below), fill out a New York State Voter Registration Form and mail it to your county’s address listed on the back of the form.

If you cannot print the form at home, please contact the Board of Elections or call 1-866-VOTE-NYC (1-866-868-3692) to request a form by mail.

How to Vote

Once you’re registered to vote, you can request an absentee ballot that will allow you to safely cast your vote by mail. (Check the “temporary illness” box on the application, unless a different reason applies to you.) Be sure to provide the correct address where you want to receive your official election ballot.

NYC Voter Qualifications

To register to vote, you must:

  • Be a citizen of the United States (includes those born in Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands)
  • Be a New York City resident for at least 30 days
  • Be 18 years old by the date of the election in which you want to vote
  • Not be serving a jail sentence or be on parole for a felony conviction
  • Not be adjudged mentally incompetent by a court
  • Not claim the right to vote elsewhere (outside the City of New York)
