About Us
The Department of Mathematics, Engineering and Computer Science (MEC)
at LaGuardia Community College serves a diverse population of students
living and/or working in the neighborhoods of western Queens. The
department offers a wide variety of courses in mathematics: from
arithmetic and basic algebra to linear algebra, calculus, and
differential equations. Students begin the study of mathematics at
levels determined by placement examination, and they quickly come to
appreciate the supportive classroom atmosphere that is a hallmark of
LaGuardia in general.
MEC students are exposed to appropriate
classroom technology, and connections are forged with learning paradigms
in other disciplines whenever possible.
A Dual/Joint
Engineering Science Program, fully articulated with City College CUNY,
has been developed. Students completing the two-year program with an
Associate’s Degree in Engineering Science and meeting the GPA
requirements are guaranteed admission to an appropriate track (Civil,
Electrical, Mechanical) of the four-year baccalaureate program at City
College; they also have the option to transfer to other engineering
programs.
Study is also available in Computer Science, and
several of its sub-disciplines, articulated with Queens College,
preparing the matriculate for advanced work at four-year institutions.
