About

Dr. Sandra Sze was born in New York City to parents who immigrated to the United States from China. She grew up in Corona, Queens. Her first language is Minnan, a dialect of Southern Fujian in China; she did not learn English until starting kindergarten. She was placed in ESL courses until third grade. Early on in her education, Dr. Sze realized that she enjoyed math and teaching. By the time she went to college, she decided that she wanted to teach at the college level. Her doctoral thesis is in algebraic number theory. She is also interested in cryptography. In her free time, she enjoys baking, crocheting, and watching movies and television.

She joined the Math, Engineering, and Computer Science Department’s OER project because she cares about equal access to learning resources. Many math textbooks and online homework platforms are expensive. With OER, she believes we can provide students with these resources for free, breaking down barriers to student access.
