She earned her Ph.D. in Statistics from the London School of Economics, alongside her undergraduate and master’s degrees in physics from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Since 2012, she has been a professor at LaGuardia Community College, where she also served as Deputy Chair of the Mathematics Department from 2018 to 2020. Dr. Cuéllar is well-known for her leadership in expanding the Carnegie Math Pathways at LaGuardia and her work on educational innovation, particularly through her collaboration from 2017 to 2019, where she played a key role in designing corequisite mathematics courses for the CUNY system.
Dr. Cuéllar’s career reflects a deep commitment to educational equity and the integration of innovative teaching practices. Her focus is on promoting equity in education in STEM fields, through data-driven strategies. From 2018 to 2020, she collaborated with the Dana Center, coaching institutions implementing Mathematics Pathways on equity data analysis. She has led projects such as “Data Coaching for Equity” and “Racial Equity in Gateway Mathematics Courses,” which aim to close equity gaps by equipping faculty with the tools and knowledge to analyze and interpret student data through an equity lens. Currently, Dr. Cuéllar co-directs the “Implementing Shared Equity Leadership” project, a two-year initiative beginning in 2024, aimed at cultivating equity-driven leadership at LaGuardia. She is also a founding member of Casa de las Américas where she served on the executive board from 2021 to 2024.
In her teaching, Dr. Cuéllar is recognized for her innovative methods. She integrates a statistics curriculum using R, helping students develop essential computational and digital literacy skills. She emphasizes the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, particularly in her Differential Equations course, where she guides students in using AI tools as personal tutors. Dr. Cuéllar is one of the 2024-2025 Building Bridges of Knowledge CUNY AI Fellows.
Beyond her academic roles, she contributes to the scientific community as a member of the Executive Board of Scientelab, where she helps integrate the Colombian scientific diaspora into educational and scientific networks. She also represents it in Colombia’s Intersectoral Roundtable of Scientific Diplomacy, fostering transnational scientific networks.
