About

Born in Miami Florida in 1962, Hugo Fernandez was raised in Dade County and the northeastern United States. Studying photography at Miami Dade Community College, he received an associate’s degree in Communications in 1985. He traveled in the western U.S., then returned to Miami and went on to earn a B.F.A. in Fine Art Photography at Florida International University in 1989. After traveling to Chile, Bolivia and Peru, he entered graduate school at the Yale School of Art, earning an M.F.A. in Fine Art Photography in 1993.

He moved to New York City after graduate school and began working at LaGuardia Community College in 1994. He teaches courses in photography.

In 2013, he returned to Chile for the first time in over 20 years. In 2015, he traveled to his families in Cuba, returning in 2016 and 2022. He exhibited the Hemingway House panoramas in New York City and in South Florida, at the Florida International University North Campus Library in February of 2019. He has had photographs published in the New York Times and “An-My Lê, Between Two Rivers” by the Museum of Modern Art
