About
Hugo Fernandez is an Afro Asian Cuban American. He was raised in South Florida and has lived and worked in the Northeastern United States for the last 30+ years. Upon graduating with his BFA from Florida International University, he traveled to Northern Chile, working on an archeological dig and editing the work of the late German photographer Robert Mann Gertsmann. He returned to Chile in 2013 with students from LaGuardia using funds from the Bureau of Education of the U.S. State Department. He has traveled to Cuba three times, documenting Havana, including the former home of Ernest Hemingway, Pinar Del Rio and Trinidad.
He lives and works in Connecticut, archiving his 40 years of film and digital photography, and writing about his family, and his work as an artist and son of exiles. He specializes in analog photography, including small, medium and large format film, color and alternative processes. His work includes South Florida, Chile, New York, Connecticut, and Cuba, with an interest in panoramas and post photography projects combining photographs and anecdotal history concerning his family’s Cuban exile history. Professor Fernandez’ recent work has been published in Bomb Magazine online, the Museum of Modern Art Publications and the New York Times.
