College Discovery Programs (CD) were created in 1965 at the City University of New York to assist students who have the potential to succeed in college but lack the educational foundation and economic resources necessary to pursue a degree.
CD at LaGuardia Community College helps students see new paths and open new doors, not only academically but also in social and vocational endeavors through a variety of support services including counseling, new student seminars, tutoring, supplemental instruction, and financial aid.
From their first semester at the College, CD students are assigned a counselor who they meet with regularly throughout their academic journey. Counselors are advocates for their students, referring them to other College services and helping them to overcome academic challenges; develop communication, time management and test taking skills and cope with personal problems.
