Transfer Resources for Faculty and Staff

Upcoming Events

LaGuardia Community College’s transfer model meets students where they are. This college-wide approach means advisors, faculty, and all other staff members work together to support students throughout the transfer process to four-year colleges. LaGuardia achieves this by preparing students to develop research and college navigation skills needed to transfer and persist at four-year colleges.

Below, you’ll find information about the role that advisors, faculty, and staff are expected to play in helping LaGuardia students prepare to transfer to a four-year college.

For more information about transferring from LaGuardia to four-year colleges, scholarships, and special programs, email transfer@lagcc.cuny.edu.

Advisors offer guidance about courses, credits, and plotting a path to four-year colleges. There are five academic advising offices (Student Academic Advising, ASAP, International Student Services, College Discovery, and Veterans Services). In addition to full-time advisors, Transfer Peer Mentors are LaGuardia alumni enrolled at a CUNY four-year college who provide support for students transferring to those institutions.

Faculty share expertise about majors, career options, research opportunities, and information about campus transfer activities. In addition to writing letters of recommendation for individual students, faculty contribute to facilitating transfer across institutions by establishing articulation agreements and CUNY’s core competencies.

Staff who work in Admissions, Student Financial Services, the Wellness Center, the Center for Career and Professional Development, and other offices also play a pivotal role in transfer. Staff members support the logistics of transfer, help with the negotiation of academics and personal life, and prompt students to attend transfer-related opportunities, apply to scholarships, and research other special programs that the college sponsors.

Faculty and Staff Transfer Mentorship

Faculty and student-facing staff can play an important role in mentoring students on their transfer journey. Adopting a transfer mindset can help faculty and staff provide vital support for LaGuardia students looking to earn a bachelor’s degree after they complete their studies here.

Faculty and staff can be “transfer mentors,” rather than “transfer experts.” With so many programs and so many colleges, it isn’t possible for any one person to know the intricacies of every or even most pathways, but we can still provide support and guidance.

We can help students. Many questions and situations involve general support and critical thinking and research skills that we can help develop by researching with them rather than for them.

We can understand that transfer is less about technical questions or the application itself and more about supporting students to achieve their goals. The application process is important, but the student’s learning, self-advocacy, and motivation are paramount.

Attend a Mentor Mindset event to learn an approach to transfer guidance that is intuitive, simple, and informed by best practices. Emails are sent each semester from the Transfer Engagement Initiative team with dates for these opportunities.

  1. Ask students about their academic interests and transfer and career goals: Do they have a clear vision of their future? If not, what can they do to explore? Are they doing well academically from a general education perspective and from a major/program core perspective? Share resources that will support their exploration:
    1. Degree Maps to stay on track while at LaGuardia.
    2. Once the student has ideas in mind, BigFuture includes a list of schools and key admissions stats.
  2. Share with students what it means to earn a bachelor’s degree (and beyond): Provide basic information on what transfer means (60+60=120 credits; upper-level courses; applying; etc.). Share your experience, talk about upper-level courses a student might take at a four-year college, and provide general knowledge on declaring a major or minor, electives, graduate study, etc.
  3. Encourage students and follow up on their progress: Ask simple questions like “have you thought about transfer,” or “have you started researching or applying to schools?” Encourage students to start the process and foster a sense of self-advocacy. If applicable, offer to write a letter of recommendation.
    1. Refer students to their advisor for course-related planning, Student Financial Services for tuition support and FAFSA application completion, and the Office of the Registrar for transcripts.
    2. Suggest scholarships, special programs, and four-year college admissions that offer full financial support for qualifying students. A list is available on the Transfer Resources for Students webpage.
    3. Encourage them to attend the Transfer Fair held each semester and transfer application workshops throughout the year. View the for the latest information.
