Eligibility
- Must be eligible to participate in Spring 2026 Commencement
- Fall 2025 (December 2025 and February 2026) Graduate
- Or Spring 2026 (June or August 2026) Candidate for Graduation
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
- Good academic and disciplinary standing
- Demonstrated record of academic achievement, service, and campus involvement
- Embodiment of the spirit of the graduating class and LaGuardia Community College
- Strong public speaking skills
- Available to deliver draft speech for the Selection Committee during auditions
- Plan to attend and fully participate in Commencement Exercises on Thursday, June 18, 2026
Application Requirements
- A letter of interest indicating why you believe you should be chosen for this honor; be sure to include academic, co-curricular and professional achievements from your time at LaGuardia.
- An outline of your proposed speech or a 45-60 second video clip of yourself delivering a portion of your draft speech.
- Note: The actual speech delivered at commencement will run approximately three minutes, which is 450– 550 words.
- Names and contact information for two LaGuardia faculty or staff references.

Selection Criteria
Completing college is both an ending and a beginning. It’s an opportunity for graduates to reflect on what has been, while anticipating new, perhaps unknown, challenges. The most well-received speeches are those that have the most meaning for the largest number of people in attendance, reflect on the common experience and share, in a personal way, the value of the education received at LaGuardia Community College.
The Selection Committee will be seeking a speaker that best fits the following criteria:
- A message that suits the occasion
- A speaker who delivers well
- A speaker with presence
Suggested Themes
Students may consider addressing one or more of the following topics in their speeches (note that is not an exhaustive list of topics that may be explored; students are welcome to structure their presentation around additional ideas):
- The transformative power of a LaGuardia Community College education.
- Information about your personal development and future outlook.
- How your personal experiences as a student shaped your educational journey at LaGuardia Community College and developed a desire for you to want to make a change in the world.
- Demonstrate a familiarity with LaGuardia’s rich heritage.
- Include examples from collegiate life, coursework, co-curricular involvement, service, reflection on the mission and vision of LaGuardia Community College, peer and other relationships developed, etc.
