John Chaney, a tenured Professor at LaGuardia, is widely recognized as a leading authority in developing productive agency collaborations with law enforcement and community providers that effectively deliver transitional resources for individuals returning from periods of incarceration leading to successful community reintegration. In addition to teaching, he currently serves as the Principal Investigator for the federally funded Accelerated College Transition (ACT) project, a three-year initiative that delivers pre- and post-release educational, training, and wraparound services for the residents of Queensboro Correctional Facility, a New York State prison located near the college campus.
The former director of Criminal Justice programs for LaGuardia, Professor Chaney was also a member of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office’s executive staff, serving as its Executive Director for the Community and Law Enforcement Resources Together (ComALERT) re-entry program, nationally recognized for its effectiveness in reducing recidivism. He was also the New York State-appointed coordinator for the Division of Criminal Justice Services’ Kings County Reentry Task Force.
He is co-editor of “Race, Education, and Reintegrating Formerly Incarcerated Citizens” ;”Gifts from the Dark: Learning from the Incarceration Experience”; and is a special editor for the international scholarly journal Dialogues in Social Justice. Professor Chaney has provided technical assistance for the Criminal Justice section for the American Bar Association; the ACCES-VR division for the New York State Department of Education; Nevada Workforce Connections; Uganda Prisons Service in East Africa; and was a guest lecturer at the famed Wellington Club in New Zealand.
A frequent conference moderator and expert panelist, his work in prisoner reintegration has received formal recognition from the New York City and State legislatures. Featured in the documentary “Counterstories: After Incarceration”, he is a member of the New York State’s Queensboro Correctional Facility advisory board and serves as board treasurer for Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center. Born and raised in Harlem, New York, Professor Chaney received his Bachelor’s degree from New York University and a Juris Doctor degree with honors from Brooklyn Law School.
