About
Andreas John Karras grew up in a family of recent immigrants who came to the U.S. from Greece. Despite being born in the U.S., Karras faced the challenges of assimilation and acceptance common to all immigrants. His family settled in the Kensington section of Philadelphia which, at the time, was a blue-collar neighborhood of brick-and-mortar factories, in the throes of economic decline. He was the first person in his family to complete college. Upon graduating from Temple University, he spent about a decade working in construction, primarily as a commercial painter. He eventually felt compelled to continue his studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. During his time there, he began teaching college classes as an adjunct. Through his many years as an adjunct, he has come to love teaching.
