About
Dr. Juline Koken is a Professor and the Director of the Mental Health: Human Services program. A social and health psychologist, she has been conducting research with sex workers of all genders since 2002 with a focus on resisting stigma, promoting mental and sexual health, and understanding the broader discourse around the meaning of sex work in a sociocultural context. Her articles have appeared in AIDS & Behavior, Journal of Psychology and Human Sexuality, and Archives of Sexual Behavior. Dr. Koken’s broader research program focuses on queer health, HIV prevention, substance use treatment and harm reduction approaches. In addition to her research, Dr. Koken is also an expert on motivational interviewing, a communication style used in counseling, social work, healthcare, education, and criminal justice settings. Dr. Koken is proud to train her students in motivational interviewing as part of the Mental Health: Human Services core curriculum. She is also a proud member of PSC CUNY and the CUNY LGBTQIA+ Consortium. When she’s not here on campus you can find Dr. Koken behind a drumset many nights a week.
