She earned her Master of Arts in Recreational Therapy and Recreation Administration Services from New York University and has proudly maintained her certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) since 1999.
From 2012 to 2021, Dr. Edwards served as the Director of Recreational Therapy and Volunteer Services at Incarnation Children’s Center, a pediatric skilled nursing facility supporting children, teens, and young adults living with HIV and AIDS. She began her work at the Center in 2001, dedicating two decades to enhancing the quality of life for medically fragile youth through purposeful, client-centered recreational therapy services.
Dr. Edwards’ commitment to improving the lives of individuals through recreational therapy led her into higher education. As a Lecturer Doctoral at LaGuardia Community College and an adjunct Assistant Professor at Lehman College, she is dedicated to preparing the next generation of recreational therapy professionals and advancing the profession through teaching, mentorship, and leadership.
Dr. Edwards is also deeply engaged in professional service and advocacy. She serves on the Diversity Committee for the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) and is a member-at-large on the ATRA Board of Directors. In addition, she is an active member of the New York State Recreation and Parks Society, where she serves on the conference committee. Dr. Edwards also contributes to the arts and youth development community as a Board Member for Arts for All, a nonprofit that provides accessible arts programming for New York City youth.
Dr. Edwards earned her Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Higher Education from Fairleigh Dickinson University. She successfully defended her dissertation in March 2024, completed all revisions in May 2024, and graduated the same month. Her research focuses on universal design for learning (UDL) for all learners, with a particular emphasis on students with disabilities.
