About

Darren Barany is a Professor of Sociology at LaGuardia. He earned his Ph.D. from the CUNY Graduate Center and has an M.P.A. from Columbia University. His work has primarily focused on how special interest groups and intellectuals shape the political culture, especially in relation to welfare state policy. Shortly after the 2016 election, he wrote about Donald Trump’s political ascent by revisiting WWII-era research on authoritarianism and contemplating the economic and political landscapes of powerlessness and despair in American society. His most recent project explores how the food industry influences public thinking on nutrition, public health, and the environment with a focus on the harmful consequences of industrial animal agriculture, disproportionately experienced by frontline and marginalized communities. He currently lives in Queens, New York.
