  • A program designed for Deaf and hard-of-hearing adults to improve their academic and communication skills.


  • Improve your reading, writing and communication skills in American Sign Language (ASL) and English in order to effectively communicate with peers, classmates and co-workers. Develop your English and Math literacy to prepare for the high school equivalency exam or college.

    As part of one of the country’s largest and most extensive programs for Deaf and Deaf-related postsecondary educational and support services at LaGuardia Community College, all levels of reading and writing classes have access to sophisticated instructional technology including computer labs and Smart classrooms.

  • INSTRUCTOR BIOGRAPHIES

    Sue Livingston, PhD, Applied Linguistics

    She has taught Deaf students for over 35 years. Her research studies of language and literacy development in Deaf children as well as interpreter effectiveness have been published in American Annals of the Deaf, Sign Language Studies and The Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability. Sue’s books include Rethinking the Education of Deaf Students, Working Text: Teaching Deaf and Second-Language Students to be Better Writers, and Working Text: X Word Grammar and Writing Activities for Students. She teaches Dual Access Basic Skills in Writing and Basic Skills in Reading.

    Roy Siskind, MA, Deaf Education, BA, Secondary Education and BS, Mathematics

    He began teaching High School Equivalency and Pre-High School Equivalency for Deaf Adults at LaGuardia in 1993. He currently teaches Dual Access Introduction to Algebra and Elementary Algebra.
