The Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE) provides pertinent institutional information and data related to students, employees, and institutional operations as deemed appropriate to the LaGuardia Community College mission and the OIRE’s unit mission.

College data come from both internal and external sources including the primary source of information from CUNY student and employee information systems (CUNYfirst). Data is typically extracted from CUNYfirst and then compiled internally to respond to specific questions about the data. These questions guide reports, dashboards, and ad hoc requests to fulfill the operational or tactical needs defined by college officials.

OIRE shares data with college departments and programs to inform operational practices, measure achievement of initiatives, support organizational and educational assessment practices, guide and report on results related to the strategic plan, and to inform relevant stakeholders.

Much of the data reported for the college is taken as a snapshot of a specific point in time (also called a “freeze date”). Data using a freeze date does not necessarily capture dynamic, or “live” data, and data captured before or after these dates may not match official data.

The Institutional Profile is produced annually by the OIRE. It reports student information from the most recently available semester against benchmarks from previous years. Providing a comprehensive look at the college, the report includes quantitative information on the college’s faculty and staff, library, finance, grants, and space. It is used for accreditation processes, grant proposals, and serves as a factbook for the college to internal and external audiences.

The college provides a variety of institutional dashboards for both public and internal use.

CUNY Insights provide data compiled by the Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analytics (OAREDA). OAREDA provides a series of dashboards, including information on enrollment, programs, and student outcomes. These tools provide CUNY-wide information, but the dashboards also allow users to filter data by college.

In addition to the dashboards above, OAREDA also offers a CUNY Fast Facts dashboard that outlines high-level, CUNY-wide metrics.

A variety of ad hoc and routine reports and research studies are conducted at the college. Here appropriate, some of these reports are made available on the OIRE website. These reports are used for internal decision-making in alignment with the college’s strategic plan. Access the reports here.

The Integrated Post Secondary Education Data System (IPEDS) provides important public information about the college including information on institutional enrollment, outcomes, human and fiscal resources, and the student costs. The purpose of the IPEDS reporting is to provide a means of viewing similarly situated institutions and their outcomes. It is also part of the college’s requirements under the Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended. Completion of IPEDS reporting is mandated by 20 USC 1094, Section 487(a)(17). Furthermore, the collection and reporting of racial/ethnic data are mandatory for all institutions that receive, are applicants for, or expect to be applicants for federal financial assistance as defined in the Department of Education (ED) regulations implementing Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (34 CFR 100.13), or defined in any ED regulations implementing Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. The collection of racial/ethnic data in vocational programs is mandated by Section 421(a)(1) of the Carl D. Perkins Vocational Education Act.

Under P.L. 88-352, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended by the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972 (29 CFR 1602, subparts O, P, and Q), LaGuardia’s Human Resources is also required to report racial/ ethnic and gender data for institutional staff, as an or more full-time employees.
