About
Communication Studies is an area of study that focuses on how people use messages to generate meanings within and across various contexts, and is the discipline that studies all forms, modes, media, and consequences of communication through humanistic, social scientific, and aesthetic inquiry. Using participatory learning, students work to enhance their oral, written, and critical thinking skills. Emphasis is placed on communication in social, professional, and culturally diverse settings, and the context of a multimedia, globalized world. The program offers two areas of concentration:

What makes this major unique?
One of the defining features of the discipline of Communication Studies is that it has many areas of specialization. That means a major in Communication Studies can often be tailored to a student’s interests, strengths, and ambitions through a variety of specialty courses.
Career Possibilities
The ability to communicate is one of the highly sought skills by employers. Communication Studies is a broad degree that can open the door to a wide variety of employment opportunities. The knowledge and skills taught in Communication courses are essential to being hired, regardless of one’s major. The curriculum prepares graduates with necessary knowledge and skills even if they change to different education or career paths than their chosen concentration. Graduates often find jobs in private, government, and non-profit sectors. Some careers may need additional courses or additional schooling in business, law, political science, psychology, public affairs, sociology, or social work.
Speech-language pathologists typically need at least a Master’s degree. Although Master’s programs do not require a particular undergraduate degree for admission, certain courses must be taken before entering a program. Internship/fellowship is required to refine the skills learned during their academic program under the supervision of a certified speech-language pathologist, and is also an integral part to be certified as a CCC-SLP (The Certificate of Clinical Competence in the field of Speech-Language Pathology). All states regulate speech-language pathologists. Most states require speech-language pathologists to be licensed, and other states require registration.
