• Radiologic Technology

Graduates of the Radiologic Technology program are eligible to sit for the national certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).

  • The Radiologic Technology (Rad. Tech.) program is coordinated by the Health Sciences Department and leads to an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) degree. Upon graduation from the program, students are eligible to sit for the national licensed exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Additional information about the association can be found online at www.arrt.org. The standards of practice for a Radiologic Technologist are also established by the New York State Division of Professional Licensing, Department of Health (DOH) and the Bureau of Environmental Radiation Protection of New York State.

Current laws generally permit licensing board or agency to deny a license to practice Radiologic Technology if the applicant has been convicted of a felony or other specific crime.  Such an individual is strongly advised to file a pre-application with the ARRT and contact the NYSDOH in writing to determine their eligibility for certification and registration.

  • The Radiologic Technology program at LaGuardia is 67 credits and consists of a Pre-clinical (pre-requisites) and Clinical (SCX courses) phases. The Clinical phase is a full time program. Students must be a Radiologic Technology major to apply for candidacy. Acceptance to the clinical phase is limited to students once a year only and is competitive. Students must file for and be accepted into candidacy in order to progress to the Clinical phase.

    Pre-Clinical Phase

All new students who are Radiologic Technology majors are admitted into the pre-clinical phase of the Radiologic Technology Program. Progression to the clinical phase of the program is competitive. Students must apply for candidacy and be accepted to enter the clinical phase.

Candidates must first complete the four key courses with a minimum GPA of 2.50. They are then ranked using a scoring system based on grades in these key courses. Since the number of students permitted to progress each semester is limited, the minimum GPA does not guarantee that a student will be selected for progression into the clinical phase of the program. Although SCB204 is not one of the four key courses, it must be completed before the start of the Clinical Phase if accepted. Students are limited to a maximum of two attempts at candidacy.

    Advisor Button

    1. In order to apply for Radiologic Technology candidacy (progression to the clinical phase of the Radiologic Technology Program), you must be a Radiologic Technology Major.

    2. You apply by registering for RAD000.4899 (Intent to RAD TECH. candidacy) in the first three weeks of the 12-week Spring I term. Check the Academic Calendar for the last date to apply. There are no credits, no meetings and no charges involved in registering for this “course”, it is merely an administrative designation showing your interest to be considered for acceptance into the clinical phase request the Candidacy Form by emailing the Health Sciences Department at HealthSci@lagcc.cuny.edu.

    3. You should only register for RAD000.4899 if you have already completed all four “key” courses or if you are going to complete all four by the end of the 12-week term in which you are applying for candidacy.

    4. If you are enrolled in one of the four “key” courses and you withdraw from that course, you must also withdraw from Intent to RAD TECH. (RAD000.4899). Withdrawal from a course is according to the college calendar. Check the college calendar for semester withdrawal dates.

    5. Please note that if you received a C-, D-, D, D+, F, WN or WU for any of the key courses and have repeated the course, both grades will be used in evaluating your candidacy. Also, if you received a grade of C-, D-, D, D+, on any of your pre-clinical courses, the course can only be repeated with the permission of the Department Chair of the respective course.

    6. Results of candidacy will not be available until all grades for the 12-week term are submitted. You will receive a letter from the Radiologic Technology program telling you when and where to obtain the results.

    7. If your candidacy is not successful, you may repeat the registration for RAD TECH (RAD000.4899) candidacy only once, unless your GPA for the key courses is below 2.50, in which case you are eliminated from the competition.

    8. To be certain you are taking the correct courses, it is always best to see a healthcare advisor in B100 or faculty members in room C252 . Days and hours of advisement are during Radiologic Technology faculty office hours which are posted in room C252. You can call (718) 482–5470 to obtain advisement hours and to schedule an appointment.

Spring 2020 CR/NC Policy – How it applies to Health Sciences Candidacy Programs

Primary licensed certification in radiography coupled with additional training, offers career mobility and advancement opportunities in post primary secondary modalities. These modalities include computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, interventional radiography, mammography, ultrasonography, radiation therapy, and nuclear medicine. A Radiologic Technologist is sometimes referred to as a Radiographer, X-Ray Technologist, Radiologic Technologist and Medical Imaging Technologist. Technologists are trained to use ionizing radiation to produce radiographs of the human body. These images aid in the detection of injury and/or disease. They prepare patients for radiologic examinations by explaining the procedure, removing jewelry and other articles that x-rays cannot pass, and position patients so that other parts of the body can be appropriately imaged. To prevent unnecessary exposure to radiation, these workers surround the exposed area with radiation protection devices, such as lead shields, or limit the size of the x-ray beam along with applying the correct amount of radiation factors to be used in each image. In addition, the Radiologic Technologist must practice effective communication, documentation, excellent patient care and technical skills.

Is there a waitlist? Does the waitlist roll over to the next semester or do I have to reapply?
There is not a waiting list per say, but an alternate list. The alternate list contains about 10 to 15 students that did not make the cut-off due the number of students allowed in the program. This list goes to the people next in line according to GPA. The alternate list does not roll over to the following year. The student will need to apply for Rad Tech candidacy again and be reranked.

When will the candidacy results be announced?
Candidacy results for Rad Tech will be announced during the second or third week of July.

If I am on the alternate list, how soon will I hear from the department if I am accepted?
Students would hear if they were accepted off the alternate list before the Fall I semester (Late August/Early September). On rare occasions, students can hear up to the start of classes if an accepted candidate decides not to take the seat.

How do letters of recommendation come into play during acceptance
No letters of recommendation are accepted for candidacy.

If I fail a course, am I able to retake it?
Students could retake a pre-clinical course if they received a grade of C- or below in the course. However, both final grades will then be averaged in consideration for candidacy.

If I do not get accepted into a clinical phase, what are my options?
If students are not accepted into the Rad Tech program, they can apply one more time for candidacy the following Spring semester. Students have the option of applying to another candidacy program. Also they can pursue a degree in a non-candidacy program or change majors to a different program at the college.

    What is advisement?
Advisement is the process when a student meets with an academic advisor to discuss course scheduling and goals towards their education and future career.

How often will I get advised? How and when will I know to get advised? Why do I have to get advised?
Students are required to be advised, at least once a semester. Your assigned advisor will appear on the “My LaGuardia page, in which they can schedule an appointment online. The purpose of advising is for the students to discuss and select courses for the following semester. Also to make sure the student is on track with taking the correct course for their program.

How and which term should I apply for Candidacy?
Students can apply for candidacy once a year, during the Spring I semester for Rad Tech. Students have to request a Candidacy Form by emailing the Health Sciences Department at HealthSci@lagcc.cuny.edu.

The Candidacy Form then needs to be filled out and emailed to the Health Sciences Department before the Candidacy Deadline. Once the form is received by the Health Sciences Department the student will receive an acknowledgement email confirming receipt of the Candidacy form.

What are the pre-clinical courses for each candidacy program? Which courses are students specifically ranked on?

    • ENG 101 (English Composition)
    • MAT 115 (College Algebra and Trigonometry)
    • SSN 187 (Urban Sociology)
    • SCB 203 (Human Anatomy & Physiology)

Students also need to also complete SCB 204 (Human Anatomy & Physiology II – receive a grade of C or better) and HSF 90 (First Year Seminar for Health Sciences) before and if they are accepted into the clinical phase of the program.

The four key courses that students are ranked on for Rad Tech candidacy are ENG 101, MAT 115, SSN 187, and SCB 203. Overall GPA, GPA of key courses, and completion of SCB203 and HSF90 are the three factors that are considered.

Which other pre-clinical courses need to be taken for each program that students aren’t ranked on but are still required?
ENG 102 (English Composition II) and SCB 204. A Minimum “C” grade must be obtained in all key courses and throughout the Rad Tech Program.

What is the minimum GPA to apply for each candidacy program?
A 2.5 minimum GPA is required for students by the end of Spring I semester when applying for Rad Tech candidacy.

How many times can a student apply for candidacy?
Student can apply for Rad Tech candidacy two times.

What if a grade of C- is received in a pre-clinical class for each of the programs?
Students will not qualify for candidacy and will need to retake that specific pre-clinical course to receive a higher grade. When a class is retaken, the final grade for candidacy ranking will be the average of the two.

Which classes need to be completed or in the process of being complete when applying for candidacy? Which class can be taken during the shorter sessions when a student has already applied for candidacy?
The only pre-clinical course that can be taken during the Spring II session when applying for Rad Tech candidacy is SCB 204. All other pre-clinical courses (ENG 101, MAT 115, SSN 187, and SCB 203) need to be completed or in the process of being completed in that respective semester applying for candidacy.

Can students apply for more than one candidacy program at a time?
Students can only apply to one candidacy program at a time

What happens if you don't get accepted two times into a candidacy program?
If a student is not accepted after two times, they will need to change their major to a different program. If students have a previous degree, they would be eligible to apply to a hospital-based program in Radiologic Technologist and would then need to research such an option.

If accepted into a candidacy program, how long is each of the clinical programs?
The clinical phase for Rad Tech is a two-year full-time program.

What is the lowest GPA accepted for each program?
The lowest GPA accepted for Rad Tech is between 3.5-3.7. This is an average depending on the GPA’s of the group and has been higher than 3.7 on occasion.

How many students apply for each program and are accepted each semester/year?
Over 100 students will apply for Rad Tech candidacy during the Spring semester and around 30 are accepted into the clinical phase of the program.

When will students find out if they have been accepted into clinical phase of each program?
Students will find out if they are accepted to the clinical phase of the Rad Tech program around the second or third week in July.
