New York State Assemblymember Patricia Fahy to Present Keynote Speech at 2023 LaGuardia Community College Commencement
LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (May 17, 2023) — New York State Assemblymember Patricia Fahy (District 109), Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, will give the keynote address at the 2023 LaGuardia Community College Commencement. The ceremony, for the more than 2,000 members of LaGuardia’s 51st graduating class, will be held on Wednesday, June 21 on the Quad of Queens College.
“On behalf of LaGuardia Community College, we are honored to have Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy as our keynote speaker at this year’s Commencement,” said President Kenneth Adams. “Throughout her tenure in the New York State Assembly, she has been a dedicated advocate for higher education. She has ensured that earning a college degree at a CUNY or SUNY college remains widely accessible by keeping tuition affordable, while allocating funding to equip campuses with modern, state-of-the-art facilities. We are grateful to Assemblywoman Fahy for her support and service.”
“As the new Chair of the Assembly Higher Education Committee, I am thrilled to join this class of more than 2,000 graduates as they embark upon their post-college endeavors, enter the workforce, or pursue continuing higher education,” said Assemblymember Patricia Fahy. “These graduates represent the future of New York State and the future of our workforce. In my role, I am committed to ensuring that each student pursuing a public higher education in New York has the resources necessary to thrive and that our campuses have the aid necessary to maintain and build facilities that are modern and state-of-the-art, while keeping higher education affordable for students and their families. Congratulations to the Class of 2023 and I look forward to joining you for your commencement in June!”
First elected in 2012, Assemblymember Patricia Fahy is a leading advocate for job creation, environmental conservation, and quality education. In addition to chairing the Higher Education Committee, she serves on the Environmental Conservation, Codes, Economic Development, and Tourism Committees. During her first term in office, Fahy was awarded Freshman Legislator of the Year by the New York State School Boards Association. In 2019, she received the New York State Industries for the Disabled’s Legislative Champion Award for her work on behalf of individuals living with developmental disabilities. In 2022, Fahy was named the Environmental Champion of the Year by the New York League of Conservation Voters. The New York State District (109) she represents includes the entire City of Albany, the Town of New Scotland, and part of the Town of Guilderland.
Assemblymember Fahy will speak to more than 2,000 graduates celebrating the completion of their associate degrees—many becoming the first in their family to earn a college degree. Nearly 10,000 attendees are expected. In addition to the graduates and their loved ones, the audience will include CUNY leadership, LaGuardia leadership, faculty and staff, community members, and other supporters.
The graduates will be marking the completion of one of 50 associate degree and certificate programs offered by LaGuardia’s nine academic departments. Major areas of study include Health Sciences, STEM, Business and Technology, and Liberal Arts. LaGuardia is the third largest producer of STEM graduates in the 25-college CUNY system. Upon graduation most students transfer to senior colleges, typically in CUNY, to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Graduates of career programs, such as Nursing, Computer Technology, and Veterinary Technology enter the workforce.
Detailed demographic information about LaGuardia’s 2023 graduating class will be shared closer to June 21.
