    MATH START

  • In preparation of the continuance of distance learning throughout Summer 2020, we'd like for interested students to consider their level of accessibility and comfort with digital platforms for learning. This includes, but may not be limited to, video calls, virtual/online class sessions, phone calls, submitting documents via email, and possible access to a printer. We will have these discussions with all students well in advance of the start of their classes and will work to ensure they have the access needed to be able to participate in our programs.

    FAQ

When do classes begin, and how do I enroll?

Classes begin a few times a year throughout the semester.

    Who is eligible?

If you meet the following criteria, you are eligible for MATH Start:
    • Earned a high school or high school equivalency diploma
    • Admitted to CUNY and allocated to LaGuardia Community College
    • Demonstrate need for skills development in Math based on your CUNY Assessment Test results or your new proficiency index scores.

Why do I need remedial classes? Why can’t I just start in credit-level courses?

Both the college’s remedial courses and MATH Start build the skills needed for college-level study in math. The advantage of MATH Start is that study is intensive, affordable and designed for high school graduates and high school equivalency diploma recipients, adults who have been out of school, and anyone who wants to make a strong start in college. MATH Start students save their financial aid for credit courses.

What happens after I complete the MATH Start program?

You will begin your CUNY college courses the next semester. As a result of college transition, you are likely to reduce the time you spend in college remedial courses and make a stronger transition to college credit courses. You will start credit courses better prepared to succeed and graduate.

How will MATH Start save me money?

College transition students do not use financial aid for MATH Start and instead save their financial aid for credit courses. Students who take several college remedial courses and use their financial aid to pay for them may run out of financial aid before completing their degree. College transition study is affordable — students pay only $35 for a term of MATH Start, which includes textbooks.

How is MATH Start so affordable – only $35?

College transition is a special effort by CUNY to help make the dream of a CUNY degree feasible for high school graduates and high school equivalency diploma recipients, and anyone who wishes to make a strong start in college.
