    MATH START

  • The CUNY Start and Math Start Department is committed to protecting the health and safety of our students and staff. For Summer 2022, our programs will be offered as hybrid (combination of online and in-person classes), providing highly interactive, live instruction each day. If you have technological needs, such as for a working laptop or a hotspot for improved and reliable WiFi connection, you will be referred to the college’s loaner program for support and assistance.

Please note that all students attending classes on campus (including hybrid courses) must submit documentation of full vaccination on CUNYFirst before the first day of in-person instruction. Please see Eligibility for more information.

    • Up to two opportunities to fulfill your developmental needs
    • Low cost: $35 per semester, including books, materials, tutoring and advisement
    • Save financial aid and spend less time in developmental courses

    FAQ

When do classes begin, and how do I enroll?

Classes begin a few times a year throughout the semester.

Why do I need developmental classes? Why can’t I just start in credit-level courses?

Both the college’s developmental courses and MATH Start build the skills needed for college-level study. The advantage of MATH Start is that study is intensive, affordable and designed for high school graduates and high school equivalency diploma recipients, adults who have been out of school, and anyone who wants to make a strong start in college.

What happens after I complete the MATH Start program?

You will reduce or eliminate your need to take additional developmental courses, and you will also be able to begin taking credit courses. This will help you get on track to earning your college degree in a timely fashion and being better prepared to succeed in college-level studies.

How will MATH Start save me money?

Students who take several developmental courses and use their financial aid to pay for them may run out of aid before completing a college degree. However, MATH Start is a low cost (only $35) program that allows you to save your financial aid award for college credit courses.

How is MATH Start so affordable – only $35?

Our program aims to alleviate the financial burden of having to pay full cost for developmental courses. This way you can use your financial aid award for credit-bearing courses that count towards your degree.

Can I enroll in credit courses while in MATH Start?

Our program is evidence based and shows that students tend to build a stronger academic foundation if they focus exclusively on developmental courses for the semester. MATH Start students do not register for other courses during their time in the program.
