LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (April 30, 2025) — LaGuardia Community College/CUNY invites local Queens artists to submit design ideas for a street mural on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, a closed-to-traffic block of 29th Street from Skillman to 47th Avenues.

“We are grateful for the partnership and support from Council Member Julie Won, NYC’s Department of Transportation and its Open Streets program, for helping us launch the LaGuardia Community Greenway in 2022,” said Kenneth Adams, President of LaGuardia Community College. “We are collaborating once again with our partners to install a street mural on the Greenway, and we invite Queens artists to submit their designs.”

President Adams said a street mural on the Greenway will bring vibrancy to Long Island City and its community.

“Street murals contribute significantly to neighborhoods and communities by beautifying public spaces, fostering a sense of identity and belonging, and promoting social and economic growth,” President Adams said. “Our Greenway will be one of the largest street murals in the city, and we look forward to receiving many design ideas.”

Artists are encouraged to submit a rendering of how the mural will appear on the LaGuardia Community Greenway. Artists can replicate the map on the mural contest webpage. Submissions, which should be in jpg, png, pdf, or Max format, can be made HERE. Submissions are being accepted until May 19.

Designs should represent the diversity and vibrancy of Queens, without any text, faces, logos, or slogans. Street mural guidelines provide more details on the use of color and dimensions of the street plaza where the mural will be painted.

Local artists are encouraged to attend an information session on Thursday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in Room E-500, on the 5th floor of LaGuardia’s E-Building (31-10 Thomson Avenue, Long Island City, Queens), to learn more about the street mural. Register for the information session here.

Community members and the Long Island City Partnership will vote for their favorite design. The winner will be announced on May 28. The winning design will be featured on T-shirts and tote bags that will be given out for free at Greenway events.

The LaGuardia Community Greenway, launched in 2022 as a pilot program, has become a permanent outdoor space for community and college members to gather and engage. It is where the college hosts regular events, drawing community organizations, local businesses, elected officials, neighborhood members, and the college community (click here to watch a recap of the 2024 Greenway series).

The 2025 LaGuardia Community Greenway series launched on April 22 with an Earth Day celebration. Upcoming events include a Hispanic Federation Career Expo on May 14, and an event focused on Pride Month, Health and Wellness, on June 4.
