LaGuardia’s Casa de Las Américas Collaborates with The Climate Museum to Create Pop-Up Exhibition
LONG ISLAND CITY, NY— (February 18, 2025) – Climate change is significantly impacting our world by causing rising global temperatures, leading to more extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts, floods, and severe storms, among other environmental activities. Casa de las Américas, the Latinx academic and culture center at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY, recently collaborated with The Climate Museum to present a pop-up version of The End of Fossil Fuel, exhibition featuring details on how climate change has impacted our world throughout the years.
The exhibition will be formally introduced with a program and reception, from 4 to 6 p.m., February 27 in the M-Lobby, where the exhibition is displayed. The pop-up exhibition is an interactive and thought-provoking show designed to spark conversation, action, and hope in the face of the climate crisis. In addition to The Climate Museum, Casa de las Américas collaborated with the NYC Climate Justice Hub, out of the New York City Environmental Justice Alliance, and the El Puente: Leaders for Peace and Justice. Dr. Ashley Dawson, author, activist, and professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and the College of Staten Island, is also a featured collaborator who will be showcasing his photos and video from his work on peaking power plants, also known as “peaker” plants.
Dr. Ryan Mann-Hamilton, Associate Professor of Social Science and Co-Director of Casa de las Américas, says, this collaborative project brings together art, science, and activism to engage visitors in creative and impactful ways to address the climate crisis.
“We invite students, faculty and staff to explore the exhibits, participate in discussions, and discover ways to take action for a more sustainable future,” Dr. Mann-Hamilton said. Attendees can also share their suggestions and thoughts about climate change on the “action post-it wall.”
Dr. Mann-Hamilton says this project follows La Casa’s mission of serving the community and collaborating with organizations to bring special experiences to the LaGuardia community.
The complete exhibit of The End of Fossil Fuel is on display at The Climate Museum and explores hard truths about the fossil fuel industry and injustice as well as brighter histories of the climate and environmental justice movement and more. The exhibit includes a 45-foot-long commissioned mural by award-winning artist and illustrator R. Gregory Christie. Soho, New York City, 2023-2024.
