LaGuardia’s 4th Annual 5K Race to Kick Off and Finish on New Street Mural in Long Island City

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (October 1, 2025) — LaGuardia Community College/CUNY invites runners, walkers, and neighbors to join the 4th Annual LaGuardia Community Run, a 5K race on Sunday, October 19, 2025. The USATF-certified course goes from LaGuardia to the LIC Waterfront and back. The start and finish will be on the LaGuardia Community Greenway, a pedestrian-only space on 29th Street between Skillman and 47th Avenues—now home to New York City’s largest street mural, designed by LaGuardia Fine Arts student Fernanda Contreras.

Fernanda’s mural, Keep It Movin’!!, was selected through a public vote from 29 entries, receiving over 2,500 votes from students, faculty, staff, and Queens community members. The design features colorful walking signals that celebrate New York City’s walkability (and run-ability!) and highlights the five subway lines—7, G, E, F, and R/N/W—that connect Long Island City to the rest of the city.

Race proceeds will support Finca La Florecita, LaGuardia’s urban farm, which provides fresh produce to the college’s food pantry, operated by LaGuardia CARES, and cultivates the next generation of Urban STEM agricultural leaders. The farm offers educational and career pathways in agriculture, soil science, food justice, and urban ecosystem enhancement.

“The fourth annual 5K Run honors Finca La Florecita, our urban farm, which exemplifies how we continue enhancing academic opportunities and experiences to align with students’ interests and the needs of today’s changing job market,” said Kenneth Adams, President of LaGuardia Community College. “This event is both a celebration of our community and a reminder of the vital role physical and mental wellness play in everyone’s lives.”

Registration is now open. The event welcomes participants ages 7 and up, at all fitness levels. Tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students and children. Participation is more than double compared to this time last year, so early registration is encouraged in case the race reaches capacity.

All participants will receive a free t-shirt and an electronic certificate featuring their photo and finish time. An Activities Plaza will feature music, raffles, and tables hosted by local businesses, sponsors, and college departments.

Medals will be awarded to the top three male, female, and non-binary finishers overall, as well as the top three finishers in the following age categories: 20 & under, 21–30, 31–40, 41–50, and 51+. Race results, photos, and finish line videos will be available online.

In addition, Tacombi—LIC, a Mexican restaurant located just a few blocks from LaGuardia Community College at 27-10 43rd Avenue, will award gift certificates to the top male, female, and non-binary finishers. Additionally, all participants can bring their race bib to the restaurant to receive a 15% discount on their meal.

LaGuardia faculty, staff, and students are invited to volunteer to assist with setup, registration, water stations, cheering squads, and more.

The race is sponsored by Boyce Technologies, Inc., based in Long Island City, Queens.
