LaGuardia Performing Arts Center Presents a Free Screening of Between Neighborhoods on the 60th Anniversary of the 1964-65 World’s Fair Conclusion

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (September 24, 2025) — LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) at LaGuardia Community College invites the public to a special free screening of Between Neighborhoods, the award-winning documentary essay by Queens-based historian and filmmaker Seth Fein. The screening will take place in LPAC’s Mainstage Theater on Friday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m., marking a milestone: sixty years to the day since the closing of the 1964–65 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows–Corona Park.

Fein, founder of Seven Local Film, has taught at LaGuardia Community College, Brooklyn College’s Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema, Barnard, Columbia, and Yale.

First released in 2017 and revised in 2024, Between Neighborhoods contemplates the histories that orbit the Unisphere—the iconic centerpiece of the last New York World’s Fair, placed at the heart of Flushing Meadows-Corona Park by controversial urban planner Robert Moses, where it still stands. The film audio-visualizes the interplay of present and past, imperialism and immigration, corporate and social globalization, between the era of Moses to leading political figures of our current time. The revised version builds on years of independent filming and multi-archival research, resulting in a diptych form that moves between original and archival footage.

Fein explains that the film reflects his commitment to connecting global and local histories through documentary art, with a split-screen format that allows audiences to see Queens—and by extension the world—through layered perspectives.

“History is not a straight line between then and now, but something that emerges in the friction between sources and temporalities, between screens as well as neighborhoods,” says Fein. “Between Neighborhoods attempts to provoke new ideas about present and past rather than simply narrate a known story. It is intended as an open conversation rather than a closed narrative.”

Fein notes that this dialogue feels especially timely in 2025. “In the run-up to the mayoral election, in which the two leading candidates have different claims to Queens—one is from here, the other lives here—the issues Between Neighborhoods raises about urban power, economics, and society are very much in the minds of New Yorkers.”

“Screening Between Neighborhoods on the 60th anniversary of the closing of the last New York World’s Fair is doubly significant,” says Fein. “The Fair’s conclusion marked not just an ending, but the beginning of the Unisphere’s independent life in New York. This anniversary also provokes questions the film raises about the relationship between past and present—between now and 60 years ago, as well as now and the decade when this project first took shape.”

Amongst its honors, Between Neighborhoods received the Founders Choice Award for Best Documentary Film at the 2017 Queens World Film Festival. It has been screened at universities and festivals across the U.S. and the U.K. and continues to be part of academic and public humanities programming.

This event is free and open to the public. Following the screening, a conversation with the filmmaker will offer audience members the opportunity to engage with the film’s provocative questions.
