LaGuardia Community College Theater Program Presents Bryna Turner’s At the Wedding, November 19–23

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (October 29, 2025) — The LaGuardia Community College Theater Program, Humanities Department, and LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) present Bryna Turner’s At the Wedding, with five performances—including a free dress rehearsal—running from November 19 and November 23. The production, staged in LPAC’s Little Theater, features students from LaGuardia’s Theater program under the direction of Theater Professor James Ryan (JR) Caldwell.
At the Wedding is a hilarious 75-minute dramedy about loneliness, estrangement, and a slow-burn romance with what it means to be in love—and to be alive. Through main character Carlo’s painful yet humorous journey, Turner explores the raw ache of heartbreak and the complexities of queer identity in spaces not designed for her.
“We chose At the Wedding because it’s a comedy in a style that many of the students haven’t worked on before,” said Professor Caldwell. “The play is a coming-of-age story with a message that we hope resonates with our student audience and broader community. Another appealing aspect of the play is its inclusivity—this is a wedding where members of the LGBTQIA+ community are represented, along with diverse perspectives on what love means.”
At the Wedding premiered off-Broadway at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater on March 21, 2022. It received the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation’s Theatre Visions Award, was a New York Times Critic’s Pick, and was featured in the New York Times’ Best of 2022 “Unforgettable Theatrical Moments” list.
The play was developed in part by TheatreSquared in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and was written by Bryna Turner, a Brooklyn-based playwright originally from Northern California.
LaGuardia Theater students have earned numerous honors at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival, the premier theater festival for students at two and four-year colleges nationwide. Alumni work throughout the theater world in various roles both on-stage and off, in administration, development, production crew, and other areas.
LaGuardia’s Theater program, which leads to an Associate of Science degree, cultivates performance-based skills through a combination of classroom training and theater experience. Participation in productions — classic and modern plays, musicals, developmental readings, and student productions — is a part of every students’ program. The program is part of the Humanities Department. Graduates often transfer to audition-based theater programs and receive scholarships to prestigious conservatories.
