LaGuardia Community College Launches GED Express to Help Students Complete Their GED

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (March 12, 2025) — LaGuardia Community College/CUNY announces the launch of GED Express, a free, online, evening program to help students who have not passed one or two subjects of the GED exam. Classes begin this month for the new program, which provides a faster track to GED completion through targeted support and resources.

GED Express focuses on the core subjects of social studies, science, reading and language arts, and math. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, approx. 25% of GED test-takers fail at least one subject, most often math and language arts. GED Express offers specialized modules and resources to ensure comprehensive coverage of each subject. Students receive targeted support based on specific areas of need.

The program is funded by the New York State Education Department and City Tax levy monies. It is offered by LaGuardia Adult Basic Skills, which serves more than 1,000 students in preparing for a GED exam, each year.

“GED Express represents a significant opportunity for individuals who have stopped out of the GED process to complete their education and achieve their goals, e.g., starting college or applying for jobs that require a GED,” said Maritza Pritsos, Senior Director of Adult Basic Skills, LaGuardia Community College.

Students can enroll at any time, provided they have passed at least two subjects of the GED exam. All prospective students must take a four-hour, in-person placement exam. The GED exam itself is computer-based and taken in person.

GED Express classes are taught Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Classes are taught in English.

Prospective students are encouraged to attend an information session through LaGuardia Adult Basic Skills to learn more about the program and placement exam requirements.
