Black History Month is celebrated every February in the United States. It originated in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. February was chosen to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, both of whom played prominent roles in shaping Black history and promoting abolition.
