Calpulli Mexican Dance Company and LaGuardia Performing Arts Center‬ Present‬ Boda Mexicana‬ (Mexican Wedding)

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (January 29, 2025) — The LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is partnering with the Calpulli Mexican Dance Company to present a restaging of Boda Mexicana (Mexican Wedding). A celebration of Mexican culture through the story of a traditional Mexican wedding, Boda Mexicana follows two lovers who travel through time, from the Mayan pyramids to the coast of Sinaloa in Northern Mexico. The show highlights indigenous and Hispanic customs of courtship, engagement, meeting the in-laws, the wedding ceremony and reception. In true telenovela style, an enchantress seeks to end the couple’s voyage of love.

“The Boda Mexicana cast of dancers and musicians will take audiences on a voyage filled with color, joy, and the Mexican spirit,” said Juan Castaño, Executive Director of Calpulli.

A public performance is scheduled for Sunday, March 23, at 2:00 p.m. on LPAC’s Mainstage Theater. Tickets are $35 for general admission. Reserve tickets here.

For students, teachers, and administrators, Calpulli and LPAC will present An Educational Journey to Boda Mexicana, on Monday, March 24, at 10:30 a.m. The staging for young audience members features excerpts from the full production with narration, a study guide, and opportunities to engage with Calpulli beyond the stage. For more information and tickets, contact Isabelle Marsico at Imarsico@lagcc.cuny.edu or (718) 482-5150.

Boda Mexicana was written by Calpulli Co-Founders Alberto Lopez Herrera and Juan Castaño. The company last performed Boda Mexicana in 2019 during its European debut in Istanbul, Turkey. The restaging at LPAC is directed by Artistic Director Grisel Pren Monje and Music Director George Saenz, with support from the Howard Gilman Foundation.

The project marks the third performance collaboration between LPAC and Calpulli. To date, this flourishing relationship has brought hundreds of community students to LPAC’s stages and created free dance classes for seniors.

“We are delighted to be growing our partnership with the LaGuardia Performing Arts Center,” said Castaño. “LPAC’s dedication to creating an inclusive artistic environment aligns with Calpulli’s mission to celebrate and preserve cultural heritage through dance. As immigrant communities and the nonprofits that serve and honor them potentially come under attack in the coming years, we need more partners that welcome people from all walks of life and create space for their stories to be shared.”
