Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training for Students

The Wellness Center and Community Health and Wellness Department are glad to offer Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) to LaGuardia CC students. MHFA is an evidenced-based training designed to help participants identify and assist students and other members of the community who may be struggling with a mental health challenge. This training gives you the skills you need to feel confident in your ability to reach out and provide initial support to someone in need.

What you will learn:

  • Common signs and symptoms of mental illness and substance use.
  • How to compassionately interact with a person in crisis.
  • How to connect the person to appropriate help.
  • How to apply the MHFA action plan (ALGEE) effectively.
  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen nonjudgmentally
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies

Participants will receive: Access to online self-paced coursework and materials, 3 Year MHFA certification and CEU eligible

Course structure: 8 hour training session from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM
