Hispanic Heritage Month at LaGuardia

Dear LaGuardia Community,

Latinx Heritage Month (also known as National Hispanic Heritage Month) is nationally celebrated from September 15 to October 15. These dates hold a special significance in the Latinx/Hispanic community as they commemorate the anniversaries of the independence days of several Latin American countries, including Chile, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, and Nicaragua, among others.

As many of you know, Latinx Heritage Month honors the rich legacy, traditions, contributions, and achievements made by Latinx and Hispanic individuals and communities. At LaGuardia we are proud to have the distinction of being a Hispanic Serving Institution that has made continuous efforts to enhance the educational experiences for all Latinx students. It is with this affirmation that we invite the college community to the Open House for La Casa de las Americas, a center to celebrate the rich and varied traditions and history of the people of Latinx heritage from all countries of the Americas.

The open house is scheduled from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., September 28 in Building M, Room 141. La Casa will connect LAGCC students, faculty, staff, and community members to activities and events exploring and honoring Latinx heritage, through original programming and partnerships with local cultural and community organizations. In addition, La Casa will aim to address nationwide inequities in college achievement between Latinx communities and other groups, through expanded services and opportunities.

As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on campus and throughout our community, I invite you to stop by and see the space that will become La Casa de las Americas – a new resource for students and an opportunity for our institution to enhance the lives of the Latinx community.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Adams
President, LaGuardia Community College
