International Holocaust Remembrance Day

Dear LaGuardia community,

Tomorrow, January 27, is International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1945. This day was designated by the United Nations in 2005 to remember and honor the approximately six million European Jews murdered by the Nazis.

The U.N. theme for this year’s remembrance is “Home and Belonging;” a series of events, in person and virtual, are scheduled over the coming days and weeks to promote education of the Holocaust and the humanity of the victims. The U.N. Holocaust Memorial Ceremony will be live-streamed at 11 a.m. on Friday.

The Kupferberg Holocaust Center at Queensborough Community College will co-host “The Ongoing Legacy and Impact of the Holocaust in U.S. Foreign Policy,” virtual discussion this evening at 6 p.m.This event will feature Ellen Germain, U.S. Department of State Special Envoy for Holocaust Issues, speaking about diplomatic efforts in these areas and how knowledge and understanding of the Holocaust informs current U.S. foreign policy.

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum will mark the day with a special live program featuring Holocaust survivor Irene Weiss. The virtual viewing will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Learn about this, and other upcoming observances on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion website.

Thank you,

Kenneth Adams
