LaGuardia Community Hosts Events to Celebrate Black History Month

LONG ISLAND CITY, NY (February 3, 2026) — February is Black History Month, which celebrates the triumphs, struggles, and profound contributions of Black people throughout history. It commemorates trailblazers in science, politics, and the arts, while fostering reflection on the ongoing fight for equality and acknowledgment of African American history.
The campus community at LaGuardia Community College/CUNY is honoring Black History Month with a variety of events and activities:
February 1 – 20: Black History Month Walking Exhibition:
Campus Life invites the college community to celebrate Black History Month by viewing a curated Walking Exhibition located at the Hall of Flags, E-Atrium, the E and M Building Corridor, and the E-lobby. The exhibition illuminates the rich contributions and pays homage to Black Americans who made strides in American Society through arts, politics, social justice movements, and more. The displays include excerpts along with profound quotes from honorees.
February 9-10: Film Screenings: The English Department, The Women’s Center & LGBTQ+ Hub, and Black Male Empowerment Cooperative (BMEC) Program are celebrating Black History Month with four film screenings.
February 9: from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., in Room E-111:
- The film, “The Six Triple Eight,” sheds light on the unsung heroes of World War II, the all-black, all-female 6888th Battalion. Directed by Tyler Perry, this compelling film celebrates resilience, sisterhood, and the importance of reclaiming forgotten stories.
- “20 Feet From Stardom,” is the untold stories of incredibly talented backup singers, exploring how race, gender, and industry dynamics keep them from success, revealing that immense talent doesn’t always equal mainstream recognition.
February 10: from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Room E-111:
- “Do The Right Thing” explores complex themes of racial tension, inequality, prejudice, and police brutality, questioning what “doing the right thing” means amidst simmering ethnic conflicts (Black, Italian, Korean) in a diverse Brooklyn neighborhood.
- “Summer of Soul” is the celebration, reclamation, and preservation of Black history, joy, and culture through the forgotten 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, highlighting music as a powerful tool for community healing and empowerment during a turbulent time.
