- About the Street Mural Contest
Fernanda’s design was selected from 29 entries in a Spring 2025 contest. Over 2,500 votes were cast by students, faculty, staff, and Queens community members.
About Fernanda Contreras
Fernanda, 20, lives in Woodside. She chose LaGuardia over the prestigious School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) for its affordability and supportive faculty. Fernanda, who has Ecuadorian heritage, balances full-time studies with a full-time job as a gate agent at LaGuardia Airport. She hopes to transfer to NYU Tisch or SAIC after graduating in Spring 2026. She plans to pursue a career in graphic design. Fernanda credits Professors Dahlia Elsayed and Brian Zegeer for their mentorship.
Mural Installation
The street mural was installed during Summer 2025 in collaboration with NYC DOT, Open Streets, and the Long Island City Partnership. Preparations began in June/July, with painting in August. Volunteers included students from the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), LaGuardia students, faculty, staff, and community members. Professors Elsayed and Arianne Fernandez oversaw the project.
About the LaGuardia Community Greenway
Launched as a pilot in 2022, the Greenway is now a permanent space for college and community events. It was created by LaGuardia students to promote physical and mental well-being and is part of NYC’s Open Streets program. The Greenway is where the college hosts public events, including the Greenway series and the LaGuardia Community Run. (Watch a recap of 2024 Greenway events here). It’s located next to LaGuardia’s urban farm, Finca La Florecita.
Greenway events welcome community members to join LaGuardia students, faculty, and staff in celebration, joy, and cultural pride— showcasing the creativity and spirit of our community and providing opportunities to connect. The free events feature live performances, refreshments, interactive games, and hands-on crafts.
