CTL Talk: Data Guided Planning and Decision Making

Curious about how student success and outcomes data can inform your teaching, research, Program Reviews, or student support work? Join us for a presentation and conversation with the leadership from the CUNY Office of Applied Research, Evaluation, and Data Analytics (OAREDA) to learn about their work supporting academic programs across CUNY.

• Who: Jeannette Kim, University Associate Dean for Pre-Matriculation Programs and Program Assessment and Zun Tang, Assistant Dean for Institutional Research
• What: Learn ways to thoughtfully engage with institutional dashboards, navigate data discussions, and identify metrics to inform your grant applications, classroom, or student support practices.

This conversation is inspired by the LaGuardia 2025-29 Strategic Plan, which emphasizes data-guided planning and decision-making in pursuing equitable outcomes for all students. Providing a foundation to “design evidence-driven solutions, evaluate them, and then embrace, modify or reject them based on their results” (LaGuardia 2025-29 Strategic Plan), Jeanette and Zun will help us explore how data can shed light on patterns in enrollment, retention, transfer, graduation, or success in introductory courses.

Questions to be explored include:

• LaGuardia or CUNY Insights data – when should you use either?
• Which dashboards are useful for pursuing grant applications? What institutional or programmatic data can strengthen your grant proposals?
• What are you interested in learning and what data can you use for an intervention in your courses or program?
• How can you avoid being lost in too much interesting data?
• Data culture, transparency, and purpose – how can we improve access to and interpretations of data? What’s the value in having a “data mindset”?
• A collegial Q&A session will follow. We look forward to your participation in this timely conversation!
