OUTspoken - An LGBTQIA Story Slam and Workshop
When: Wednesday, May 05, 2021 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM
Where: Online (Zoom)
The Moth's education team will lead a Virtual Intensive Workshop + Story SLAM at LAGCC. The Moth's mission is to promote storytelling and to honor and celebrate the diversity and commonality of human experience. Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of stories told live and without notes, many of which are broadcast on National Public Radio (NPR). The Moth Education Program would offer an opportunity for us to provide a safe space for our LGBTQIA students to share their experiences and build community, and possibly connect beyond LaGuardia.
This virtual 6-hour workshop will be divided into two 3-hour sessions across two days (May 5, 2021 and May 12, 2021). In the workshops, instructors from The Moth introduce the concepts of Moth Storytelling, help participants (LGBTQIA) find the stories they would like to tell, and work with them to refine and practice their stories. The participants will use these Moth strategies within instructor-facilitated small groups, which will also develop tools to provide peer feedback and help one another craft their stories. After the workshop, participants will have the opportunity (if they choose) to share their stories in a virtual College SLAM (3rd day), produced by The Moth, which will be open to the wider college community. All sessions will be held on Zoom. Up to 10 student participants may participate, and the opportunity is open to the entire student community.
