LaGuardia Community College is also an authorized training center for the following National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) courses:
Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)
Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS)
Psychological Trauma in EMS Patients (PTEP)

These courses are intended for certified/licensed emergency healthcare providers. Commission on Accreditation for Prehospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) credit is awarded upon successful completion of these courses.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic

Prepare yourself with the knowledge and skills needed to render patient care on an emergency ambulance. When you successfully complete the course, you will take your NYS Department of Health Certification Exam for EMT-Basic. This course is necessary to advance to the one year program of paramedic education. REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma or equivalency
  • 18 years of age by last day of month in which certification exam is given
  • Passing of pre-screening process

CAREER PROFILE

EMTs primarily perform emergency and transport ambulance work in the private, municipal and hospital ambulance sectors, earning $15 – $25/hour. This is a career path to paramedic and firefighter.

This profession has a very high rate of employment for those with a driver’s license with 6 points or less.

In order to enter LaGuardia’s EMT class, you must be at least 18 years of age during the month the class ends. You will also need to take a reading comprehension test, pass an interview, and provide evidence of a high school or equivalency diploma or higher credential.

LaGuardia’s Pre-Hospital Care Programs office has listings of both paid and volunteer opportunities for EMTs available for students upon request.

The EMT course is 208 hours over a 2-4 month period, depending on the schedule.

EMT night classes meet Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 6:00 – 9:30 p.m. EMT day classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. The exception is the summer day class, which meets Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

EMT rotation sites include Lenox Hill Hospital, Manhattan; SeniorCare EMS at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, Manhattan; SeniorCare EMS at Brooklyn Hospital Center, Brooklyn; NYU at Lutheran Medical Center, Brooklyn; Kingsbrook Medical Center, Brooklyn; SeniorCare EMS at St. Barnabas Hospital, Bronx; and many additional locations.

Currently there is a shortage of EMTs in New York City, making employment prospects excellent. The Fire Department of New York, hospitals and private companies have been actively recruiting on campus. LaGuardia graduates are sought after by many employers.
