Spring 2018 FYS Core Survey for students: Coming soon Spring 2018 FYS Student Evaluation of SSM: Coming soon
Below is a list of documents that will help SSMs better understand their roles and responsibilities and facilitate the FYS Studio Hour effectively.
Below is a list of lesson plan and activities applicable to all disciplines. If you have questions, please contact Estefany.
Below is a list of presentations prepared by SSMs and based on brief interviews with representatives from the respective office. These presentations were put together for students and faculty in the FYS. If you have questions about any of these resources, you should contact the SSMs who prepared the presentation.
We are sharing an exciting opportunity that can benefit you and your students alike. In an effort to strengthen your connections with students in your discipline, we are opening up an opportunity for SSMs to visit FYS Studio Hour courses that fall within their discipline so that you can share your own student experience with students.
How does this apply to you?
More than likely, you are facilitating a Studio Hour in a discipline that you are not entirely familiar with because it’s not related to your major. Therefore, having someone who majors in the discipline or close to it will help you better understand how to work with your students and will help your students get a better perspective on the discipline.
How will this help you?
If you ask another SSM come to your Studio Hour, this will help you better understand the field and the different opportunities or resources your students can take advantage of. If you are asked to come to another Studio Hour, you will have the opportunity to build a connection with students in your discipline and share any tips you find helpful to have.
Are you required to do this?
No. If you don’t have the time in your Studio Hour for the remainder of the semester, you don’t have to do this. We offer this opportunity because we realize there is value in sharing your own student experience with students in your discipline.
If you want to take advantage of this, what should you do?
Check out this link and review the SSMs majors and availability. This way, you will have a better idea about when it’s a good time to invite an SSM to your class. Once you’re sure about the time, reach out the SSM to arrange the visit. As with other matters related to your class, we recommend informing your faculty partner prior to the visit.
We hope that, if feasible, you can take advantage of this opportunity and strengthen your mentoring experience with FY students at LaGuardia. Thanks in advance for the work you all do.
