Research In Curriculum

Research in the curriculum in the Department of Natural Sciences at LaGuardia Community College, is understood as the practice where research activities or projects, embedded in the curriculum and incorporated into the classroom, are designed to move students from observers of science to science practitioners, promoting critical thinking, contributing new information to the body of scientific knowledge, building communities both within and outside the classroom, sparking curiosity and understanding of the interrelationship between science and society.

The initiative to incorporate research into the classroom allows for all students taking science courses at LaGuardia to engage in these activities. Many faculty in the Department of Natural Science also mentor students through specific programs such as the NIH-Bridges Program and the CUNY Research Scholars Program (CRSP).

Student Publications

LaGuardia students Christine Silva and Ekaterina Arslanbaeva developed and completely solved a mathematical model that describes motion of avalanche in N-dimensions.

Gallery

Environmental Microbiology - Specimen Isolation by Microbiology student. Students isolated, characterized and identify organisms using traditional and molecular identification methods. They compared which type of produce among organic and supermarket purchased would have the greatest diversity of Microbes.
