About WOMEN In Technology
The goal of MEC Women in STEM initiative is to raise visibility of Women in STEM areas at LaGuardia and increase enrollment/retention of women in STEM, especially in Technology-related fields. At the same time, LaGuardia Women in Technology Initiative specifically addresses a gender diversity issue in Tech sector (sTem). Women are a distinct minority in technology-related fields in both industry and academia, and a gender diversity issue calls for a close attention. Women’s involvement in tech sector/tech majors is on decline contrary to the situation in other STEM professions. For instance, in 2013, only 26% of computing jobs in the US were held by women as compared to 35% in 1990
Some of the Women in Tech/STEM events organized under these initiatives will be profiling some amazing women who are connected with LaGuardia in one way or another. The panelists will share their stories and experiences from different fields within the industry and academia, providing guidance and serving as an inspiration for LaGuardia female and other underrepresented students in STEM. Other events will provide opportunities for diverse teams of students to share their undergraduate sTem-related research experiences with LaGuardia community.
We hope that every visitor/participant of this academic year’s activities will find the atmosphere of all our events socially encouraging, engaging, and inspiring! We hope that everyone will feel more connected with each other and finds a Role Model that is just near her or him!
