Greetings from Program Director
Honors educators have a saying that Honors students are not so much born but made. What we mean is that Honors programs offer individuals an opportunity to become “Honors students”— courageous, curious and motivated students who seek intellectual challenge, and who also use their academic strengths to transform their lives and, more importantly, the lives of others.
Since its inception in the late 1980s, LaGuardia’s Honors Program has been dedicated to the above philosophy. You can read about the Honors Program in the following article and in a recent issue of CUNY Matters (article starts on page 2). LaGuardia’s Honors students come from all walks of life, but they all share a commitment to developing their intellect and character. I invite you to view the “Our Scholars” page to learn about some of our Honors graduates.
Our program is flexible enough to welcome eligible students who want to take just a few Honors courses, and those who want to complete the Honors Program Concentration by taking at least seven Honors courses (see curriculum specifications on the “Honors Curriculum” page). Either way, you will benefit from being in a stimulating academic environment and learn the tools for becoming a successful graduate and transfer student.
In addition, there is the added value of having an Honors notation on your transcript when you complete an Honors course. Scholarship committees and four-year college admissions officers do take note of such distinctions because they are always looking to recruit and recognize those students who are highly-motivated and have completed advanced courses.
Finally, whether you are an Honors Program participant or want to complete the Honors Concentration, you will belong to our Honors community and can join various Honors events (Honors colloquia, workshops and so on) during the semester. We are developing different ways to create leadership opportunities for Honors students, so do stay engaged and be on the look out for upcoming developments. Sign up to be on our electronic list and Facebook Page. This way, you will never miss out on Honors Program news (as well as scholarship and transfer opportunities), and you can actively help us build the Honors Program!
I look forward to meeting many of you.
Dr. Karlyn Koh
