Many scholars would estimate that in the English language there are more than a million words. In that vast collection of terms, the N-word holds a distinctive position. In one instance, it is an extreme slur that has plagued generations of black for centuries. While at the same, it has become a widespread term of blandishment used by the descendants of the very people who once had to live under its suppressive influence.
