An entrepreneurial spirit led Gobinda to open a small business in Nepal with family, and also gave him first hand insight into the needs of other small business owners. “In Nepal small business owners cannot afford accounting software; they keep paper records and have no registers.I want to build and release an affordable accounting app.”

My name is Hasan Hasibul. I arrived in New York City from Bangladesh in 2009 and knew that I wanted to study programming in the U.S. but was unsure of what my options would be once I had my degree. I worked hard and took ESL classes to learn English well enough to be able to study at LaGuardia. Though I loved computers and programming, I wasn't sure if I would ever be able to get a job doing anything more than continuing to drive a taxi in order to support myself.

In the Fall of 2013 I was offered a chance to work as an intern through ERA at Jetaport, an online travel site. At first, I wasn't sure if I had all the necessary skills to do the job, but I got the support I needed from faculty and staff at LaGuardia and from my colleagues at Jetaport. Through my internship I learned how to apply my programming skills in a "real world" situation. I loved the environment at ERA and worked well with my colleagues. We became like a family. So when my 3-month internship was coming to an end, I was offered a position at Jetaport. Not only was I going to be making a good salary, but I was also offered stock options in the company. Now, my position as a Senior Software Engineer has turned into Lead Developer.

    Programming & Systems

Byron returned to the Division of Adult and Continuing Education, completing the Computer Service Technician Certificate Program.

When Byron Rivas started at LaGuardia in the high school equivalency program, he didn’t know that he would eventually graduate with a college degree. Earning his high school equivalency diploma in 2005, he returned to the Division of Adult and Continuing Education, completing the Computer Service Technician Certificate Program, and is now about to graduate from LaGuardia with an Associates Degree in Programming and Systems. Currently, Byron manages a technology repair shop, where he fixes computers and cell phones. He plans to obtain a Bachelors Degree, and perhaps even a Masters Degree, in Computer Science.

“One of the main things I learned at LaGuardia is that if we set a goal, such as finishing school, we can do it,” says Byron. “In my professional life, it has given me the boost I needed to achieve greater things.”

José Nicolás Dután, a native of Ecuador, started out at LaGuardia taking classes in The English LanguageCenter, and went on to graduate from the College with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Computer Technology in 2012. Three years later, he returned to the Division of Adult and Continuing Education, seeking further learning opportunities in his field.

“As an IT professional, I understand that things in this field change very fast,” says José. “My goal was to find out whether or not I was keeping up with the new technologies.”

Enrolling in the Computer Service Technician (CST) Certificate Program*, Jose soon realized he made the right decision, as he gained experience troubleshooting in the hands-on program. The self-employed computer technician says he is considering pursuing the CompTIA Network+ certification and then possibly CCNA certification.

“Short programs like CST can have a huge impact on someone's profession,” says José.

Born in Albania and raised in Italy, Enkeleid has moved to New York to earn his associate degree at LaGuardia Community College.

To help him pursue his passion for computing and problem solving, in summer 2015 LaGuardia granted Enkeleid the opportunity to intern at ERA – Entrepreneurs Roundtable Accelerator – one of the most successful tech business accelerators in New York City. While at ERA, Enkeleid leveraged the strong computer science foundations that he had acquired at LaGuardia to help tech startups Place Pixel, Modern Lend, and Muse Find develop their platforms by increasing their dataset through a web scraping application in Python that collects data from websites.

Enkeleid enjoys taking on challenging problems and using his ingenuity to find new and creative solutions. He plans to pursue a degree in Data Science and Cybersecurity at a senior college while seeking new internships opportunities.
