Transfer Scholarships

There are several scholarships designed specifically with community college students like you in mind.

Here are just a few worth looking into as you prepare to transfer:

The Friedman Transfer Scholars is a program for students from CUNY’s two-year colleges who transfer to a Macaulay Honors four-year CUNY college partner school. Friedman Scholars receive funding and individualized advising to support their undergraduate studies.

LaGuardia is one of NYU’s CCTOP partner schools. Representatives from the program regularly host information sessions for LaGuardia students to learn more about how the program can fund their studies at NYU. Keep an eye on the Transfer Events calendar to find out when the next info session is.

The Vassar College Exploring Transfer program is a five-week summer program designed to give you the opportunity to explore transfer opportunities while experiencing education at a four-year residential college.  All expenses are paid, and the program is open to all qualified, matriculated LaGuardia students.

LaGuardia students who apply to the University at Buffalo are automatically considered for the school’s transfer scholarship when they submit their application.

This prestigious undergraduate transfer scholarship provides high-performing community college students with the financial and academic support to complete their studies at a four-year university.

First-year LaGuardia students who hope to transfer to a four-year college after their second year here can get specialized academic and financial support through this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depending on the kind of advice you’re looking for, you have a handful of different options. If you’re looking for academic advice regarding specific courses for your major, an academic advisor can help you. For career guidance and information about what you might want to do with your major, your Faculty Mentor or a Career can help you. There are also Wellness Counselors to help you manage personal questions. If you’re not sure who to go to for help, contact transfer@lagcc.cuny.edu and we’ll help get you connected to the right person.

Be sure to carefully review the application requirements of each school you intend to apply to—each school is different and may have different requirements. Most schools outside of the CUNY system use the Common App to collect application materials. Check each school’s website to make sure you have all of the documentation necessary to complete your application.

LaGuardia’s Writing Center is a valuable resource to get feedback on your writing. You can also get help from a trusted faculty or staff member who knows you well.

Identify a member of the faculty or staff who knows you well and reach out to them no later than one month before the application deadline to request your letter of recommendation.

You can request official or unofficial transcripts from the Registrar’s Office.

Be sure to meet with an advisor to make sure you’re on track to complete your program at LaGuardia before you intend to enroll at another school. You can also conduct a DegreeWorks audit to view your progress toward graduation.

In your first year, attend some transfer events and consult the CUNY Transfer Hub and HSAC Transfer Guide. Be sure to consider:

Your desired transfer and college experience, commuter or resident? Urban or rural? Big or small?

Start by looking into programs at CUNY, SUNY, and colleges across the country. As you do your research, consider what you want from a college

  • Use a transfer grid to organize information such as costs and transfer requirements.

Review what credits will transfer using the What-if Tool, CUNY Explorer, SUNY Course tables, and by consulting each transfer institution.

It’s time to narrow down your search. There is a lot to organize, so you’ll need to make sure to:

Request recommendation letters and outline personal statements.

Meet with a faculty mentor or advisor before you graduate to get advice on the next steps to take on your journey. To complete the application process:

  • Confirm you’re meeting all required deadlines.
  • Clear any holds on your account.
  • Request transcripts, including high school transcript if needed.
  • Review your personal statements and essays with the Writing Center.
  • Confirm recommendation letters before deadlines.

File FAFSA, and include all potential schools.

Graduate! Articulation agreements and academies may accelerate the graduation and transfer process.

  • Once you’ve been accepted, it’s time to decide where you want to go.
  • Review your financial aid, credit transfers, and options available that may help pay for college.

Make sure to attend any admitted student events, and make your final enrollment decision by the confirmation deadline.

Congratulations! Even as you embark on new adventures, you’ll always be part of the LaGuardia community. Don’t forget to:
