About The First Year Seminar (FYS) Course
What is the First Year Seminar course?
All students at LaGuardia are required to take the First Year Seminar course based on their academic major. Taking the FYS course will deepen your understanding of your major, future career, and overall experience at LaGuardia. Hear what students have to say about the course and how it can benefit you in this video.
What are the components of the First Year Seminar?

What is the FYS Studio Hour?
he Studio Hour is an hour affiliated with the FYS course that takes place in a computer lab. During this weekly one-hour class, students will work with a Student Success Mentor on developing an ePortfolio, while being introduced to their major, career pathways, and the many resources (both academic and student life-related) LaGuardia has to offer. The Studio Hour is part of the FYS course and the SSM will work with the faculty on designing and facilitating the assignments of the course.
Will I receive a grade for the First Year Seminar?
Yes, you will be given one grade based on your performance in both the Faculty Hour and Studio Hour.
Does the FYS offer credits?
Yes, and here is the breakdown of credits offered for each discipline.
What do I have to do to successfully complete the First Year Seminar?
Consistently arriving to class on time and leaving when class is finished is important. Second, completing and handing in assignments on time. Lastly, ask for help when you need it! Your professor and SSM are there to provide you with support and guidance during the semester. Asking questions will help you build a good relationship with them as well as help you better understand the content of the course.
About The Student Success Mentor (SSM)
Who is the Student Success Mentor?
An SSM assists FYS students with ePortfolio and other assignments. SSMs guide first year students in adjusting to college and getting to know LaGuardia and its resources. Most SSMs are current LaGuardia students or graduates attending senior colleges. Because of their experience, SSMs are prepared to help students in the FYS course better navigate the college and cultivate the habits of mind needed to make it all the way to graduation day. Where can I reach my Student Success Mentor (SSM)?
The best way to reach your SSM is through email. Students will get their SSM’s contact email on the first day of class. Also, you can set up an appointment during the SSMs
and visit the FYS lab located in C-447.
How can I stay up to date with resources for students?
The SSM program has an active Facebook community where we share great resources with students. Whether it’s a scholarship opportunity or a tip during finals’ week, students will find lots of helpful resources. In addition to the SSM Facebook page, we encourage students to stay connected with the LaGuardia Facebook community, too. There, students will find more resources available at the college as well as information about cool events.

What is an ePortfolio?
An electronic portfolio (ePortfolio) is a personal website given to every registered LaGuardia student. An ePortfolio not only helps you set educational and career goals, it's also a tool for reflective learning that can help you learn about yourself. LaGuardia is widely recognized for its innovative, comprehensive ePortfolio program.

How do I access ePortfolio?
To get an account, you must be a LaGuardia student with a student Live account. Digication is LaGuardia’s ePortfolio system and you can access it through your My LaGuardia single sign-on account and entering the following information:
• Username: firstname.lastname
• Password: your eight digit CUNY-first ID (EMPLID) and the last two digits of your birth year.
For example, if your CUNYfirst ID (EMPLID) is 01234567 and you were born in 1993, then your password is 0123456793.
How can my ePortfolio help me succeed after FYS?
Completing your FYS ePortfolio will help you map your academic journey at LaGuardia. One section in particular, the Planning My Degree, will help you think about your major and what courses you need to take next before continuing at a senior college. The Career Planning section is another section that will help you see what professions you may want to pursue once you graduate from college. Finally, after completing the FYS course, students have the chance to be nominated for
the ePortfolio Student Scholars program.

If you're having trouble with your ePortfolio, see their
for a list of common ePortfolio issues and solutions. If the troubleshooting page does not help you resolve your issue, you can go to the FYS lab in C-447 and speak to an SSM about any FYS ePortfolio-related question you may have.

Holds are indicators of required action and may prevent you from performing CUNYfirst tasks. Some holds may prevent you from enrolling in classes so it’s important that you resolve Holds immediately. Continuing students should log into CUNYfirst, go to the Student Center and look at the Holds box. Click on the Details link and then the title of the Hold for information. For more information about accessing Hold details, visit the CUNYfirst Self Service Training Guides on our website, and in the Campus Personal Information section, click on the View Holds link.

Yes, as long as the student keeps the email credentials current which means logging into their email at least once every three months so that it doesn’t get deactivated.
