What makes this major unique?
The LPN is a certificate/non degree pathway which takes 10 months to complete once the pre-requisite courses have been completed (shorter duration than to be an RN). LPNs work primarily in long term care settings as opposed to hospital settings, supervised by an RN, NP, physician, or midwife. The LPN is not allowed to assess patients, but can collect data and report that data to the RN.
Career Possibilities
LPNs are vital members of health care teams but do not have the same level of responsibility. Students who wish to advance in the nursing field will need to pursue additional education.
Transfer Possibilities
The LPN program is a certificate program — students do not earn an associate’s degree. Students who earn their LPN license can return to LaGuardia to complete the RN portion of their training through the LPN to RN Advanced Standing Pathway (Bridge program).
