Great News! The Library Expansion – Phase 1 of the Library’s Renovation – has been completed! The Library officially reopens on Friday, May 12.

Students, faculty and staff will enjoy the beautiful, new, modern and larger Library.

    Highlights of the Expansion include:

    • A 75% increase in Library seating from 420 to 732 seats, a 60% increase in the Library's overall size
    • Eleven new high-tech group study and reading rooms, and more study spaces so students can find a quiet space to study alone or collaboratively
    • Additional connection capabilities for personal devices, e.g., laptops, tablets, cell phones, to the College’s Wi-Fi networks using both wired and wireless connections
    • Greater access to electrical outlets
    • A new media lab, faculty suites, archive space and new offices
    • Expanded windows to allow for natural light

The Expansion included reorganizing and upgrading the space on the first floor and connecting it to the new second floor with a staircase and expanded elevator service. The first-floor renovation adapts to the digitalization of academic libraries in the past decade, a dramatic transformation that replaces shelves crammed with books with open areas designed for students with laptops.

The Library Renovation Phase 2 – will focus on the first floor and renovations will be based on input received by students, faculty and staff.

Construction on the Library Expansion project continues to progress; earlier this month we welcomed NYC Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer to tour the 2nd floor construction site in a visit that was covered by NY1.

The 2-story structural columns were reinforced, allowing the opening of the concrete slab between the first and second floors to begin. Installation of electrical wiring, IT and architectural finishes continues. HVAC and fire protection systems are substantially complete.

The Division of Administration is committed to keeping the College community informed and safe for the duration of this project. Please don’t hesitate call our 24/7 - hotline number, 718-349-4100, with concerns or questions.
