  • President Mellow and Dina Powell from Goldman Sachs speak with NY1 about 10,000 Small Businesses.

    Since 2010, LaGuardia has teamed up with investment banking firm Goldman Sachs to help business owners create jobs and economic opportunity by giving them greater access to education, financial capital and business support services thorough the 10,000 Small Businesses Program. LaGuardia President Dr. Gail Mellow and President of the Goldman Sachs Foundation Dina Powell sat down with NY1 to talk about the program.



  • President Mellow joins Secretary Duncan in Panel Discussion on Future of Higher Education

    In a speech on Monday, July 27, 2015, at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, Education Secretary Arne Duncan delivered a dual message on accountability in higher education. Joining him were educators from across the country, and among them, President of LaGuardia Community College, Dr. Gail O. Mellow.

    Secretary Duncan laid out the problem in blunt terms as Congress prepares to revise the nation’s main higher education law. For millions of students, he said, “our higher education system isn’t delivering what they need, or deserve.”

  • President’s Society Ushers Community College Students from Classroom to Workforce


    In his State of the Union address this year, President Obama proposed a plan to offer  free tuition for two years at community colleges to make the path to a degree and better jobs even easier for low-income students and their families. But money isn’t the only hurdle for some community college students.

    Andrea Vasquez reports on a unique program at LaGuardia Community College called the  President’s Society where students are learning professional and life skills you can’t experience in a classroom.

  • Community Colleges: Helping the U.S. Become “First in the World”

    Under Secretary of Education Ted Mitchell visited LaGuardia Community College, to announce that LaGuardia is among the 24 winners of a new $75 million First in the World (FITW) federal grant program. Designed to fund innovation in higher education in ways that help keep the quality of a college education up, and the costs down, the grant will help more students of every background fulfill their dreams of earning a degree.

  • Dr. Gail O. Mellow, president of LaGuardia Community College and a national leader in higher education, joined a group of prominent educators at The Hamilton Project Policy forum in Washington, D.C. to discuss how new policies to refinance higher education can improve students’ chances of completing their college education. Dr. Mellow is the only community college president who participated in the event.

  • Dr. Mellow’s Views on the Obama Proposal Broadcast on PBS

    As a nationally recognized leader and expert on community colleges, LaGuardia’s President Gail Mellow was invited to join a panel of experts on higher education in discussing President Obama's new proposals for higher education reform on the nationwide broadcast of the PBS NewsHour. Dr. Mellow placed the President’s proposals within the context of LaGuardia’s students and real life experiences.
