TASC Testing Center

LaGuardia Community College is an official NY State Education Department testing center for the high school equivalency examination, called the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC).

The TASC has replaced the former General Education Development (GED) exam in New York State and is given on campus 12 times a year in English and four times a year in Spanish. It is offered in paper version and as a computer based test.

The TASC is offered at LaGuardia Community College on Friday evening and all day Saturday on given dates.

HOW TO APPLY

Any New York State resident who is 19 or older* and does not have a high school diploma may take the TASC.

Visit the NY State Education Department (NYSED) website and print out and complete Attachment A. You will then need to submit Attachment A along with a copy of proof of residence in New York State to an official NSYED testing center.

You can apply to take the TASC at LaGuardia by delivering your Attachment A and proof of New York State residence to Room C400 or mailing it to:

Please note:

Submitting an application does not guarantee a seat. If you would like an individualized response, please include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your application.

Once registered at a testing center, you cannot apply to take the TASC at any other test center.

All New York State testing locations and dates are posted on the NYSED website.

*17-18 year olds must fill out the appropriate NYSED forms with attachments.

When is the TASC given?

How long is the TASC exam?

The TASC includes five sections and takes about nine hours to complete:

Language Arts – Reading

Language Arts – Writing (includes grammar and essay writing)

Mathematics (includes sections with and without a calculator)

Science (calculators are permitted)

Social Studies

How can I prepare to take the exam?

LaGuardia Community College offers adult basic education and high school equivalency classes on weekdays, during the day and evening. For more information and to apply visit High School Equivalency or call (718) 482-5385.

Where can I practice for the TASC?

Visit www.tasctest.com for some practice questions.

What if I took the GED or TASC previously and did not pass?

If you fail one or more of the test sections, those sections may be retaken after 60 days. The TASC can be taken up to three times within one year. An application needs to be completed each time you take the test.

Passing scores from previous GED tests will count towards earning a high school equivalency diploma. Take the TASC only for the subjects that you failed.

Transcripts can be requested from the NY State Education Department.

What if I need special accommodations to take the TASC?

There are forms that your doctor needs to complete that must be submitted along with the TASC application to our testing site. These documents are sent for approval to DRC/CTB, publishers of the TASC. Once the submitted paperwork is approved, we can then schedule a date for your test.

LaGuardia Community College offers classes that prepare you to earn your high school equivalency diploma. Courses range in levels from basic academic skills to direct high school equivalency preparation. You will develop your knowledge and skills in math, reading, writing, social studies and science to help you pass the TASC.
