After becoming pregnant with her first child at age 13 and getting married at 14, Salvadorian-American Lillian Zepeda didn’t think much about college; she was a mother and a homemaker first, working part-time at her mother’s real estate office. But after visiting her sister at college, Lillian realized she needed something more.

Moving from place to place, she lived with her father who struggled as a field worker, until her aunts convinced him to bring her to Port au Prince where she could start school. At the age of 11, she moved to the United States to live with an aunt in New York.

Alejandro Madi

LaGuardia Community College’s 2011 Commencement student speaker Alejandro Madi has always been ambitious. As a mischievous child in Venezuela, he was moved through five different elementary schools. However, after moving to Queens with his mother and sister because of his country’s political instability, Alejandro channeled his energy into more productive activities and lots of them.
