“LaGuardia has introduced a new leadership program for STEM majors called President’s Society: Tech. PS: Tech is modeled on a successful leadership program designed to provide our low-income, high-potential students with the real world skills and connections they need to compete in today’s business world. Students receive a stipend to participate in PS: Tech and an opportunity to expand their network through tailored mentorship and career exploration programming. PS: Tech will bridge academia and industry through a wide range of learning opportunities, including tours of tech companies, panel discussions with experts working in tech, workshops to enhance skill-building, and networking opportunities with members of NYC’s tech ecosystem. Focus areas will include entrepreneurship, interviewing skills, resume preparation, personal branding and the elevator pitch”
We are seeking partners from technology-driven companies that are interested in hosting a diverse group of 15-20 tech-minded students at their company’s offices and facilitating a panel discussion with their employees on their personal trajectories into the tech sector. This past semester our students were hosted at 9 different tech companies. Students had the opportunity to visit companies across the tech ecosystem landscape like, Facebook, Google, MongoDB, and Idealist. What we have learned is that our students are really hungry for opportunities in the tech sector but often lack the social capital that is needed to successfully enter and navigate the ecosystem. Through the panel discussions our students gain a deeper understanding on how the tech ecosystem functions and are presented with an opportunity to build their professional networks.
'It was such a pleasure to host the P.S Tech students and faculty at the Idealist HQ-- what an amazing way to integrate CUNY students into real world industry experience. The students were bright, engaged, and wonderfully receptive to our workshop on personal branding. I've have the pleasure of continuing mentorship with a couple of them. Truly a success!" - Bradley Michelson Idealist
“Microsoft is proud to support LaGuardia’s President’s Society: Tech leadership development program. We believe that students need supportive environments, like PS: Tech, to build the professional skills and networks needed to excel in New York City’s tech ecosystem, and today’s changing workplace. In addition, Microsoft is always looking for exceptional candidates who possess the drive, talent and grit to build technologies that make the world a better place. From our experience hosting the students, PS: Tech graduates are prepared to leverage their diverse life experiences, as well as their skills and knowledge, to help deepen the quality of the tech workforce around the world.” - Bernie Milan, Enterprise Account Executive, Microsoft NY
